Leviathan Wakes is a space opera set in the not too distant future. It is written by Stephen SA Corey. Pen name for two authors. This is the first book in The Expanse series. And is also the first book I’ve read from these two authors.
Stephen S.A. Corey is the pen name for Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham who have wrote the whole series together.
Leviathan Wakes’ Characters
Leviathan Wakes (Click here to buy from Amazon) splits between two points of view. Holden is the XO (Commander) of the ship Canterbury. On a routine check of a damaged ship. Holden and a few of his crew mates. Leave the safety of the Canterbury to investigate the damaged ship. After a few close calls. An unidentified ship appears and opens fire on the Canterbury, destroying the ship. And all its occupants. This promotes Holden to captain. Following the demise of his friends. And crew mates he sets out to find the one’s responsible.
Miller is a belter a human that was born In the belt of asteroids. He is a cop for the local security force. For the station that he lives on. The top brass assign Miller to investigate a disappearance of a young wealthy woman. The investigation leads Miller to Holden.
This is one of the best books I have read in recent years. The writing is a joy to read. Corey writes in a way to give the reader enough information to understand what is going on. Without any information dumps.
Both characters are very easy to identify. Even without the chapter headings, including their name. Holden is a very righteous man. That always wants to do the right thing. Unfortunately for Holden. The Universe doesn’t react the way he thinks it will. Which causes huge impact on the whole of mankind.
Miller, on the other hand, is very streetwise. He understands the universe and how it works. He’s still a good guy. But is willing to sacrifice his own conscience to get the job done. And to protect as many people as he can. Even when he starts Hallucinating.
The world building in this book Is amazing. It isn’t limited to descriptions of spaceships, planets, et cetera. But also how the different types of people interact with each other. Depending on where you are born. Which results in different attitudes towards you. Such as working on a Belter station while being an earth born human results in a lot of mistrust.
My only issue with this book is Holden. He makes the same mistakes twice, which causes Universal implications. You would think after the first time he would keep his mouth shut? And try and find another way. But he doesn’t.
I completely agree with Millers actions throughout the book. He made the best of the situation. And because of him a lot of people survived. He did murder a few people. But, compared to the death count due to Holden’s actions. They were nothing. But, Holden punishes Miller for it.
The ending of the book is amazing. I enjoyed it and the stakes were very high. Corey has left a lot of unanswered questions and a cliffhanger. That spawned many sequels. I can’t wait to read the next few books. And see where the two authors take us. This is a must read for any Sci-fi lovers. And I would recommend picking this up as soon as you can.
There is an Amazon Prime series. Which I have yet to watch. But I am looking forward to it, especially after reading this book. Yet I won’t watch it until I have finished reading the series.
